Helen Russell's 2018 book The Atlas of Happiness: The Global Secrets of How to Be Happy offers a world tour, in alphabetical order by country, of a few dozen words and phrases dealing with cheery-adjacent concepts:

  • Australia — "Fair go" — justice (along with "No worries")
  • Bhutan — "Gross National Happiness" — attending to societal well-being
  • Brazil — "Saudade" — melancholy and sorrow (to be recognized and avoided)
  • Canada — "Joie de vivre" — enjoyment of life
  • China — "Xingfu" — life-happiness, well-being
  • Costa Rica — "Pura vida" — optimism, happiness, "pure life"
  • Denmark — "Arbejdsglæde" — contentment, job-life balance, "happiness at work"
  • England — "Jolly" — general cheerfulness in the face of adversity
  • Finland — "Kalsarikännit" — cozy at-home relaxation, literally "pants drunk"
  • Germany — "Gemütlichkeit" — comfort-inducing pleasantness, in moderation
  • Greece — "Meraki" — creative precision, devotion, undivided attention
  • Hawaii — "Aloha" — love, kindness, compassion, respect
  • Iceland — "Þetta reddast" — "it will all work out"
  • India — "Jugaad" — frugal innovation
  • Ireland — "Craic" — news and conversation
  • Italy — "Dolce far niente" — "the sweetness of doing nothing"
  • Japan — "Wabi-sabi" — beauty in simplicity and imperfection
  • New Zealand — "Türangawaewae & Haka" — places of empowerment and connection, shared energy
  • Norway — "Friluftsliv" — open-air living
  • Russia — "Azart" — excitement, passion
  • South Africa — "Ubuntu" — interconnection and sharing
  • Spain — "Tapeo & Sobremesa" — meeting for food and conversation
  • Sweden — "Smultronställe & Lagom" — a quiet place to relax & "just enough"
  • Switzerland — "Federerism" — coined by the author, "control, precision, ... industriousness, order"
  • Syria — "Tarab" — musically-triggered emotions

... rather a mixed bag, arguably redundant, tangential, arbitrary, and questionable — but overall positive sentiments!
